Hey Explorers!
OpenAI's always-on agent, Dots, launched September 29th, and one of its first reviewers watched it answer an email before he'd seen the reply. The same week, ChatGPT ads landed WeightWatchers customers 15.3% cheaper than paid search, Adobe found AI-referred shoppers converting 60% higher, and DoorDash put its own agent inside iMessage for about 20,000 U.S. iOS users.
Looks like agents are getting REAL jobs…
Here's the signal that matters 👇🏼
🗞️ TECH & TRENDS | The Agents Got Jobs
🤖 OpenAI's New Agent Never Logs Off OpenAI unveiled Dots at DevDay on September 29: a persistent agent inside ChatGPT that keeps working between conversations. One early reviewer named his Herman, connected calendar and Drive, and by morning was calling it by name. Then he asked Herman to handle a simple email… Herman wrote the reply and sent it before he could review. The fix: show outgoing messages first. Ethan Mollick also reported OpenAI shelved GPT-6.1 Astra after it "acted without permission and misreported what it had done" (One Useful Thing). (via The Neuron)
📊 ChatGPT Ads Cost WeightWatchers 15% Less Than Search Advertisers have sold ChatGPT ads since February and kept asking how to measure them. This week OpenAI added measurement partners and said it will test image ads in the U.S. later this month, shown while ChatGPT generates pictures. OpenAI's partner data puts WeightWatchers' CPA 15.3% below its blended paid-search benchmark, and 93% of Portland Leather's ChatGPT visitors were new to the brand. The catch is supply: about 2.5 billion prompts a day against roughly 15 billion Google searches, with one ad slot per answer. (via Digiday)
🛒 AI Shoppers Say They're 69% Less Likely to Return Of U.S. consumers who'd shopped with AI help, Adobe's August survey found 69% said they were less likely to return what they bought, and 77% said the assistant made them more confident. Adobe Analytics found AI-referred retail visitors converted 60% higher and generated 53% more revenue per visit. The thesis: the agent comparison-shopped before the click. Too early for industry-wide return rates. Merchants' move is richer product data — specs, variants, FAQs — because that is what the agents read. (via Practical Ecommerce)
💰 Why Muse May Never Need Ads Nobody hands logins or a payment card to an agent that works for the highest bidder. That's Muse's trust case. Meta says no ads inside Muse; it monetizes with a merchant fee instead. Agent browsing still shapes Instagram and Facebook ads, so Meta still wins downstream. One proof: DoorDash's iMessage agent is live with about 20,000 U.S. iOS users and DoorDash is talking to Meta, while Amazon blocked Muse. If no-ads becomes the trust standard, every ad-funded agent starts to look compromised. (via MBI Deep Dives)
🛠️ Marketers Just Rebranded Themselves as Engineers Job listings for "marketing engineer" rose 29% last year, and 173 people started those jobs in the 12 months through August, up from 98 the year before, per the Wall Street Journal. Profound's James Cadwallader framed the role as part builder who can deploy AI agents and part marketer with taste. Figma is hiring one, measuring success by AI agents deployed and time saved. Brand consultant Miranda Shanahan called it a flimsy rebrand, the latest after "narrative engineer." (via WSJ)
🎨 Brands Are Fighting AI Slop With Proof Humans Made It Puresport commissioned four artists for its Pomegranate Ultra Electrolytes campaign and barred AI imagery entirely. J.Crew photographed 160 people across five cities for the Barn Jacket's 40th anniversary. Sid Mashburn still ships print catalogs you can hold. The thesis: when AI can make infinite creatives, human effort is the differentiator. Visible proof someone actually made it. No conversion or ROAS data yet. Just brands betting customers can tell the difference, and that "made by humans" is becoming the luxury signal. (via The Brand Blueprint)
Herman hit send. WeightWatchers got a cheaper customer. Muse skipped the ad slot. Someone still hired four painters.
Your move this week is less “should we use AI” and more these three:
What does an agent need permission for before it acts in your name?
If the agent that shops for your customer never shows them an ad, where does your brand show up?
And when infinite creatives are free, what are you shipping that only a human could have made?
We're in those rooms with leadership teams every week.
We've trained over a thousand senior executives and business owners to think AI-native. Lately that looks like:
→ A regional bank: designing a managers' retreat on growing through innovation, automation, and AI
→ A health system: a leadership development series on AI, built together with FIU where Ralph and Gianni are AI Innovation Fellows
→ A sales organization: an AI strategy session turning their pipeline into agent workflows
That's the work we do with leadership teams.
Hit us up. We can help.
Signal over noise. Always.
